Violins and Violas

The violin is the highest and smallest member of the violin family. The violin section is probably the most common carrier of the melody in orchestral scores:

Sometimes instead of the whole section, a solo violin plays the melody.

The viola is a larger version of the violin, also held under the chin.

Its range lies in between the high violin and the low cello, but it is rarely given the melody.
