Cellos and Basses

The cello is the low instrument of the violin family and is held between the knees instead of under the chin. It is a common bass instrument.

However, because of its rich resonance, it is also sometimes used as a melodic instrument in its upper register.

Basses (also known as string basses, double basses, or contrabasses, are among the lowest instruments in the orchestra and the most common carriers of the lowest bass line. Frequently they play the same part together with the cellos, but an octave lower.

It rarely has an independent melody but is often a powerful supporting pitch in the orchestra.
