Many types of drums may be called upon in a symphony orchestra. One of the most prominent is the timpani. Timpani are large hemispherical drums that can be tuned to particular pitches.

The snare drum has some wires that lay across the membrane and rattle against it, giving it its characteristic noisy timbre. It is often associated with marches and military scenes.

Other drums include the bass drum, tom-toms, congas, and bongos (the last two associated with Latin jazz). In this clip, timpani is joined by tom-toms of various sizes:
