Double reeds are instruments in which two pieces of stiff wood (usually cane) are tied together and fixed to the end of a tube. When the player blows on them, they vibrate and that vibration is resonated in the tube. The highest pitched double reed in the orchestra is the oboe.
The english horn (sometimes called the cor anglais) is double reed pitched somewhat lower than the oboe.
