Horns

Horns or "French horns" are buzzed-lip instruments; that is, the player creates a vibration in the resonating tube by buzzing his or her lips against the mouthpiece. These instruments are also called brass instruments, but they need not be made of brass. The horn is also called the French horn. Like the tuba but unlike the trumpet or trombone, the tube (the "bore") is conical; that is, it starts out narrow and gets gradually larger. Also unlike other brass instruments, the end of the tube (the "bell") points backwards and the player's fist lies within the bell.

The timbre of the horn is not as bright as a trumpet or trombone and, though it is also softer than those instruments, it can still be powerful.
